Hilary Duff Just Dyed Her Hair Blue Amid Pregnancy—But It’s Not What You Think

Hilary Duff just dyed her hair a stunning shade of bright blue—but insists it's not a gender-reveal stunt.
Duff, who announced she was pregnant with her third child back in October, debuted her vibrant new look on Instagram. “Well.... you guessed it. The minute I got home from New York I needed a change,” the Younger star wrote on February 19. “I swear this doesn’t mean I’m having a boy... my mom thought I was trying to tell everyone something! We still don’t know who’s occupying my apartment—but it’s getting the eviction notice soon-ish 😛.”
Her cotton candy blue locks look incredible thanks to stylists Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri, who also utilized Great Lengths hair extensions for that full mermaid look. “All I can say is @riawna and @nikkilee901 love me a lot,” Duff joked in her caption. “1—for saying yes to another crazy change this late in my pregnancy (at least I didn’t cut bangs!) and 2—it took all damn day! Love you guys the most.”
The 33-year-old performer was not joking when she said the style took all day. “In order to get her hair this vibrant cotton candy blue, I had to first prelighten her hair with Joico’s Blonde Life,” Nine Zero One and In Common Beauty founder Nikki Lee revealed in a statement. “Thank God I had my bestie Riawna Capri to help me because we put in what felt like hundreds of foils.”

Before you ask: Yes, it's safe to dye one's hair while pregnant, according to the American Pregnancy Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “Most research indicates the chemicals found in both semipermanent and permanent dyes are not highly toxic and are safe to use during pregnancy,” the APA website states. “In addition, only small amounts of hair dye may be absorbed by the skin, leaving little that would be able to reach the fetus.”
Hilary Duff already has two children: her eight-year-old son, Luca Cruz, with ex Mike Comrie, and her two-year-old daughter, Banks Violet, with her husband, Matthew Koma.
“I'm not one of those women who loves being pregnant by any means, but I appreciate what my body's doing for me and our family,” the Lizzie McGuire star told People in December. “So any given day, it varies between me missing my body that I get to put really cute clothes on, or feeling at peace that this is probably the last time that I'm going to be pregnant and trying to enjoy how sweet this time can be.”
Sometimes you just need to do something for yourself. “I don't know if I'm having a boy or a girl,” Duff reiterated in a video showing off her new look. “But, you know, I gotta have fun somehow.”
