Lizzie McGuire went off the air on 2004, but the Disney Channel original sitcom starring Hilary Duff (and the movie spinoff, which we’re still obsessed with) was never, ever forgotten by its legions of fans: those who grew up alongside Lizzie, Gordo, Miranda, Ethan Craft, and their friends. If you’ve been yearning for the days when Lizzie narrated her middle school dramas alongside her animated alter ego, you’re in luck, because Disney is officially bringing the show back and Hilary is stepping into Lizzie’s platform shoes once more.
According to Variety, the show is making a comeback on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, and creator Terri Minsky will be on hand as showrunner. The show will focus on a grown-up Lizzie, now in her 30s and living in New York City.
What can we expect from our beloved Lizzie? “Lizzie has also grown up, she’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget,” Hilary said from the Disney D23 event on Friday, August 23, where the news was made public. “She has her dream job, the perfect life right now working as an apprentice to a fancy New York City decorator.” Hilary also added that Lizzie is dating “the perfect man, who owns a fancy restaurant” but didn’t add if it’s the legendary heartthrob Ethan, her pal Gordo, or someone else entirely. The suspense!
Hilary took to her Instagram Stories before the announcement to share her excitement — and her nerves. “I’m here …. To announce the Lizzie McGuire reboot for Disney+ and I am beyond excited,” she said. “Honestly, I’ve thought about what I would say for quite a few days now and I don’t have words. I’ve really missed her, and I think now is a great time for her to come back in her 30s. She’s everybody’s best friend, I can’t wait to go on this next chapter with her and I hope everyone is as excited as I am.”
Additionally, Hil also posted a cute Instagram video full of iconic Lizzie clips, writing, “SURPRISE!!! I’ve been trying to contain this excitement for a loooong time while this has been in the works! I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl ♥️...and into her 30’s.”
The internet is very excited about the big news, and fans flooded Twitter with their fond memories of Lizzie and her crew. “Okay Disney+ you can have my money cause Lizzie McGuire is coming back and I just…” tweeted one fan. “Listen, Lizzie McGuire was my everything and all I wanted out of life was to be her and now they’re making a reboot and I’m actually losing my mind,” gushed another. (Same.)
While there’s no official release date for the Lizzie McGuire reboot just yet — and no information about whether her original castmates are returning to their roles — we’re hoping Hilary shares a few peeks behind the scenes as she starts filming. We just have one question: is animated Lizzie making a comeback too? Even 30-year-olds need advice from their cartoon counterpart once in awhile.
