Co-parenting is never an easy task, but Hilary Duff and her ex-husband Mike Comrie definitely make it a priority. The Younger actress just announced her engagement to singer-songwriter Matthew Koma, which got us thinking about what Hilary refers to as her “modern family.”

Hilary and Mike started dating in 2007, and were married in 2010. They welcomed their son Luca in March 2012, but they reportedly separated in January 2014. One year later, Hilary filed for divorce from the Canadian ex-hockey player in February 2015.

Despite the public’s sadness over the couple’s breakup, Hilary and Mike have apparently remained on good terms, from their split to now. In fact, they went on vacation with Luca just one month after announcing their separation.

Hilary captioned the photo of her ex and son with a series of hashtags, including “#modernfamily.”

She’s shared birthday and Father’s Day tributes, among others, after their split (A truly commendable move, if you ask us). In 2016, Comrie even posed for a family photo at the Duff family’s Thanksgiving celebration.

Shortly after Thanksgiving 2016, Hilary gushed about her healthy relationship with Mike in an interview with Cosmopolitan.

“Mike’s amazing,” she says. “We’re so ingrained in each other’s lives. I wouldn’t choose anyone else to co-parent with. We are really good friends and care a lot about each other.”

Hilary was probably the most candid in March 2017, when she told Redbook, “I'm divorced, and it sucks. Well, it did suck for a while; now it's just normal.”

In November 2017, she told E! how they remain amicable.

“We do the best we can every day and we always try to take each other into consideration and put Luca first,” she said. “The base of it is we truly care about each other and we are good friends and we love each other’s family and we love our kid. And that’s just it. It’s not always that simple, but for the most part, when you break it down, that’s how it works.”

She echoed a similar sentiment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in January 2016:

“We have such a great kid, and we’re both so obsessed with him. And we are good friends, and we laugh a lot. And we have a great communication. We share stories and pictures when one is not with Luca. He’s great, we’re great, and we just keep on truckin’.”

They might be exes, and their relationship might not always be perfect, but Hilary and Mike are definitely co-parenting goals.
