Hilary Duff's Hit "So Yesterday" Was Released 15 Years Ago

Throwin' it back to 2003.

Back in 2003, there was no such thing as an iPhone, people had dial-up internet and got their music news from TRL, and everyone preferred AOL Instant Messenger to texting. And speaking of AIM, one of your go-to away messages (remember those?) was probably Hilary Duff’s classic hit, “So Yesterday," which is now officially 15 years old. Yep.

With lyrical gems like, "I’m just a bird that’s already flown away" and "If you're moving on, I'm already gone/If the light is off then it isn't on," the song was basically a precursor to Dua Lipa's "New Rules" — an anthem for getting over a bad romance and learning to prioritize your happiness. According to a fan account on Twitter, “So Yesterday” celebrated its 15th birthday on July 15.

And it truly does feel like yesterday that we were graced with such an iconic pop song. "So Yesterday" was Hilary’s breakout hit after her stint on Lizzie McGuire, and it launched her into the pop sphere in a whole new way. “So Yesterday” spent twenty weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit number one on TRL, the ultimate achievement back in the ‘00s. The video, too, is probably still fresh in your memory — remember how she pranks her ex and sports a ton of classic ‘00s fashion trends, including some very Avril Lavigne-esque leather gloves? Ah, the 2000s really were such a great time.

Now, of course, Hilary is a staple in the cultural zeitgeist, whether it's through gifs of her Lizzie days or through her current work starring on TVLand's Younger. Fans on Twitter celebrated the momentous occasion, calling "So Yesterday" a “masterpiece” and saying they were “raised on this song!” Clearly, the enduring influence of Hilary and “So Yesterday” will never be “so yesterday” to her fans. (Sorry.)
