Highclere Castle Resident Lady Carnarvon Shares What It Was Like to Have the Downton Abbey Movie Film at Her Home

Do you smell that lovely fragrance in the air? Cedarwood and violet muddled with gardenia and musk, perhaps? It's the scent of Downton Abbey, the movie, which debuts in theaters tomorrow, September 20th.

If you've ever wondered what it's like behind-the-scenes in Highclere Castle—where the show and movie are both set and also filmed—Town & Country has lifted up the curtain to give us a peek inside. Lady Carnarvon, who resides at the picturesque Highclere Park estate with her husband, George Herbert, 8th Earl of Carnarvon, spoke with the publication about what filming at her home is like.

“I’m always trying to continue the tradition of kindness and giving back at Highclere; that is the culture we have at the office. We are always trying to understand what other people want but… then we started to understand that they are a film company so they wanted everything," said Lady Carnarvon. "We had to be really specific about which rooms they could and could not use. But, I would allow them to go into other rooms because I am a very, very nice person. We got used to working with them to make sure they had what they needed.”

Lady Carnarvon also revealed that the crew encountered quite the animal kingdom on the property's roughly 6,000 acres. “We have 1,800 ewes and 3,500 lambs—they stayed on the property the whole time during filming," she admitted. Another cool anecdote? Security codes around the property were set to significant dates in European history. If only we could guess the digits and snoop around a bit and see what pans out between assistant cook Daisy, and footman Andy.
