High schooler found dead a week after being pulled in by rip current, Oregon cops say

The body of a missing high schooler was found along an Oregon coastline more than a week after he was caught in a rip current, rescuers said.

Authorities said the body believed to be Jacob Stokes was found in a tideline Sunday, May 21, in Tolovana Park, the Cannon Beach Police Department said in a Facebook post.

Stokes was wading in knee-deep water with three people off Cannon Beach on May 12 when they were caught in a rip current, according to Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District.

Two people made it out of the water on their own, and one person was rescued, fire officials said. But Stokes vanished in the water.

Stokes was a senior at Mountainside High School in Beaverton, according to the school.

“Jacob was a kind and thoughtful young man,” his high school said in a Facebook post. “He pushed for excellence in all areas of his life, whether that be on the cross country course, on the track or in the classroom.”

Fire officials warned the public of unpredictable rip currents in the Pacific Ocean that “can take a person out in a matter of seconds.”

If anyone sees a distressed swimmer, they should call 911, officials said.

Beaverton is less than 10 miles west of downtown Portland.
