This High-Fashion Eyeliner Using a Straw Is Polarizing Instagram
Instagram has introduced me to just about every household item one could possibly use to create perfectly precise winged eyeliner. Scissors, bobby pins, tweezers — I've seen them all. Lately, I've been less concerned about created cat eyes that are as sharp as Japanese knives and more about graphic liner. So when I saw that makeup artist Karim Rahman used a drinking straw to stamp on squiggly liner, I got excited. As someone who prefers both drinking liquids out of a straw and bold liner looks, I was sold.
In a video Vimi Joshi, a M.A.C. global senior make up artist, posted a video of the creation of the straw liner look in action backstage at Lanvin's spring/summer 2018 show this week. You can see someone paint the bendy part of a straw with M.A.C.'s Pro Longwear Fluidline in Blacktrack before pressing it onto skin to create imperfectly perfect jagged liner. On a model, the straw-stamped liner sits a couple centimeters above the last line and acts only as a wing, and I'm actually obsessed. It's quick, easy, and daring — all I could hope for in liner lately.
However, I realized not everyone is on the same page as me when I scrolled through the comments. Of course, some people were living for the look just as much as I am, commenting with praise. But on the other side of the fence, you have people asking if the straw liner was a joke. No, people, this isn't like feather brows or any variation of the brow art trend. One user called @jadenbeltz02 even wrote, "SINCE WHEN TF WAS THAT A WING. Idk if she was kidding or not but this is stressing me out." My favorite of the negative comments, though, was from @ily_priano: "runway makeup be wildin."
You're right, @ily_priano. Runway makeup can be weird and hard to understand. Not everything you see on models season after season was created with the everyday person in mind. But that's the awesome part about runway makeup. It's meant to expand our ideas of what makeup can be, and the looks often trickle down into something more low-key and attainable. I have a feeling more people are going to be experimenting with floating wings or imperfect graphic liner by spring of next year. Mark my words. In the meantime, I'm trying this out ASAP.
