Hideo Kojima Says Your Mom Will Think His Next Game Is A Movie

Hideo Kojima is a man of mystery, at least when it comes to his games. You can watch a nearly 10-minute trailer for one of his upcoming games and still be clueless about what you just saw. So naturally, when he says his next video game is also going to be a movie, you pay attention to it.

Announced at PlayStation’s first State of Play this year, Kojima’s next game (after OD) is being developed under the code name “Physint”. It’s an action espionage game that is going to be the spiritual successor to the Metal Gear Solid franchise. While development hasn’t fully started yet on the game, Kojima isn’t shying away from teasing its sky-high ambitions. In a recent HideoTube episode (of course, the man’s YouTube video is called that), Kojima said that Physint will be “both a game and a movie at the same time.”

“Of course, it will be a game,” he said. “However, if your mother walks in and sees you playing this game, she’ll think you’re watching a movie. I’m not sure how far we can take it yet.” There you have it. God bless Kojima Productions and the weird games they make.

Expanding on that, Kojima said the reason he started working on Physint is, you guessed it, the incessant fan demand for another Metal Gear-type game. He said that after falling ill during the COVID-19 pandemic and undergoing surgery, he wanted to prioritize making video games again.

Physint isn’t the closest thing to a movie that Kojima will make. That honour goes to the live-action adaptation of Death Stranding, which A24 will co-produce. But why a movie? Why not adapt it into a TV show like The Last of Us?

“...with A24, I want to make something that’s based on a game, but also indie and artistic. Something that can win awards at film festivals like Cannes, Venice or Sundance.” Kojima revealed that no director has been attached to the film yet, and it hasn’t been finalised whether Norman Reedus, who played Sam Bridges in the game, will start in the film.

Kojima Productions' next game, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, will release in 2025 for PS5.
