Is there a new Dunder Mifflin branch opening up? Ten years after The Office aired its final episodes, there are rumors of a potential reboot...but don't get your hopes up quite yet.

It all started back in 2019, when it was teased that The Office might be rebooted to coincide with the launch of the Peacock streaming service. Then, the original series showrunner, Greg Daniels, quickly nixed that idea.

However, now things are starting to look up, as murmurings of a reboot are getting circulated yet again. In fact, just this month, journalist Matt Belloni seemed to hint that a reboot was in the works.

Now, Belloni has clarified a few things as the Writers Guild of America strike comes to a close.

In a new Puck newsletter, Belloni writes: “The Internet went a little nuts over my mention on Sunday that showrunner Greg Daniels is doing a new version of The Office...Whatever, this is a development deal, people!”

He added, “Right before the strike, Daniels was closing a pact to return to the format and see if he can come up with something worth making. Now, post-strike, he’ll close the deal and do just that. NBC and Universal Television, which licensed the format from creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, would certainly love to make a new version; they’ve been talking about it for years. But this is still a waaays away.”

So there's clearly nothing official in the works yet, and even if Daniels does strike a development deal, there’s no saying whether the show will actually make it to our TV screens or not.

As far as whether any cast members might return, it seems unlikely that star Steve Carell (AKA Michael Scott) would reprise his role.

When asked about playing Michael again in 2018, Carell said to Collider’s Christina Radish: “I'll tell you, no. I feel like I'm a broken record, talking about this because I get asked about it...I just can't see it being the same thing, and I think most folks would want it to be the same thing, but it wouldn't be. Ultimately, I think it's maybe best to leave well enough alone and just let it exist as what it was.”
