To say I'm obsessed with my dog would be an understatement. My friends have come to accept that the two of us are a package deal (I no longer have to ask, "Can my dog come??" 'cause it's assumed), but let me tell ya, navigating the New York City subway system with a not-so-smol doggo is ruff (lol, sry). And while my pet stroller has gotten *plenty* of use over the years, I sometimes need the flexibility that comes with a pet carrier. A dog carrier backpack can make everything from hiking to biking to flying with your fur bb SO much easier...as long as you invest in the right one, that is.

Maybe you want a roomy, cozy carrier that'll keep your pet comfortable during flights and car trips. Or maybe you need something secure and structured that'll allow Fido to ride straight up on your back. Whatever you're looking for (and no matter how chonky your pup is), I've got plenty of options for ya, because no, you can't just carry your dog around in any ol' backpack. Take a peek below at the winners (though ofc, you'll wanna make sure any bag you choose is large enough to accommodate your pup).

Ahead, all the best dog carrier backpacks for your furry friend, as well as tips for choosing the right one (oh, and side note: Any of these would make a paw-some gift for a pet parent!).

Maxine One

I never thought I'd be able to carry my 40-pound Corgi Lab mix comfortably on my back...until I discovered the Maxine One. Designed by NYC-based influencer Bryan Reisberg and inspired by his internet-famous corgi Maxine, this backpack is srsly next-level, featuring a rigid structure for keeping your dog's spine straighter and a soft polyester interior. Other perks include a reinforced neck collar, high-strength buckles, and even a cutout for my pup's floofy tail. It has an impressive 50-pound weight capacity, and there's also a smaller version with a weight capacity of 35 pounds.

THE REVIEW: "This dog backpack carrier is super strong and more durable than others we’ve tried," one review reads. "It can be difficult to find a carrier that is comfortable for our miniature dachshunds because of their elongated spines that need to stay straight to prevent injuries. One of our favorite features is that this pack can hold up to 50 pounds."

Plus 2

K9 Sport Sack makes a whole line of forward-facing backpack dog carriers, but the most versatile option is probs the Plus 2. With its thicker shoulder straps and padded back panel, this bb is ideal for small- to medium-sized dogs and more strenuous activities, like hiking and biking—and it even includes a detachable storage pack for gear, treats, or other adventure essentials.

THE REVIEW: According to one reviewer, "The pack is padded well and comfortable to wear. I am confident with the enclosure and feel she will not tumble out and stay secure. The straps seem like a hassle to place the pet in and out, but it’s a smooth process with little question of if it’s done right. I am able to load her and have her safely secure in about a minute."

G-Train Dog Carrier Backpack

Lightweight yet rugged, this backpack from Kurgo is great for taking smaller pups on the go (especially since the front handle allows it to transform from a backpack into a traditional carrier!). It's got an interior safety tether for clipping to your dog's collar and a lil roll-up mesh window so they can peek out—and humans will <3 the two water bottle sleeves and padded laptop compartment.

THE REVIEW: "This backpack is literally the best thing that I have purchased so far," raves one reviewer. "I am so happy with it. The second we got it, my dog got in and just took a few hours nap in there—it's like it just made her feel safe and happy. It is definitely much bigger than I expected, which is cool, because she has a lot of space to move around and be comfortable."

Ready-for-Adventure Pet Backpack

Designed to comply with the in-cabin requirements of most major airlines, this Roverlund bag is truly ideal for catching flights with your fur bb. In addition to being airline compliant, this multi-purpose bag includes a laptop sleeve, two water bottle holders, and three (!!) zippered head openings, so your doggo has ~options.~ And ofc, there's also an inner leash clip to keep your pup secured.

THE REVIEW: "Much easier to put pup in this than the regular rectangular carrier and less awkward to walk around with," one review reads. "Definitely enough ventilation. The pocket in the front is a generous size to carry some puppy pads just in case, treats, a bone, and a leash, and probably more. Also the side drink holders are helpful as well."

Muttmover Luxe Backpack

Warning: Your dog may not wanna leave this one once they get in it, and tbh, I wouldn't blame 'em. Designed with a super-deep silhouette and structured body, this roomy bag includes both top and side access panels for your doggo to poke their head out, a harness clip, and multiple external pockets for your stuff. Reviewers also appreciate the removable sternum and waist straps, as well as the handy collapsible dog bowl.

THE REVIEW: As one tester notes, "We've tried 3 different backpack/sling options before this. This is the first option that is sturdy and comfortable for him and us. I like the chest and hip straps, the sturdy bottom and structure of the pack, as well as the mesh and side head hole. This is perfect for long hikes when he needs a break."

Go Everywhere Backpack

I never thought I'd call a dog carrier backpack "pretty," but here we are!! This elevated bag is a chic way to tote your smol dog everywhere, thanks to the included safety latch, fuzzy interior, and v functional details (we're talking storage pockets, credit card slots, and even a waste bag holder pocket). Best of all, you can lay this bb flat and unzip it to turn it into a cozy pup bed.

THE REVIEW: "The Go Everywhere Backpack is just that," notes one reviewer. "It’s made traveling via plane so simple. Our fave part is that the bag can be used as a 'bed.' Kylo was able to stand, lay, and play with his chew toy, all while strapped to my back."

QQ: Are dog carrier backpacks safe?

Yes, carrier backpacks are safe for dogs...as long as they're specially designed for pets. But pls note: If your dog is older or has a pre-existing health condition, then you should consult your vet before using a dog backpack. Likewise, it's recommended to only use carrier backpacks with fully-developed dogs (sorry, puppies!). Plus, you'll need to take your own health and ability into account, 'cause wearing a canine as a backpack for stretches of time isn't the easiest.

To acclimate a new rider, you'll wanna help your dog adjust with positive reinforcement and repetition. Start small with short lil jaunts around the house and work your way up. Even when your dog is comfortable in their carrier, it's best not to exceed more than an hour of wear without giving both yourself and your furry friend a break. And not to state the obvious, but you'll need to make sure any bag you buy can safely and comfortably hold your dog while still keeping them secure. Speaking of which...

How to choose the best dog carrier backpack

Check out the size and weight limits

Dog carrier backpacks work best for small- to medium-sized breeds (though FYI, K9 Sport Sack *does* have a bag called the Kolossus, which can handle up to 80 pounds of pup!!). Be sure to look at the dimensions and weight limitations of each bag to ensure it's a good fit for you—and remember that buying a backpack that's way too big for your dog can be just as dangerous as buying a bag that's too small, since you want your friend to feel secure!

Consider how you'll be using

If you plan on doing ~athletic~ activities with your dog (such as biking or hiking), then you'll wanna go with a backpack that keeps 'em very secure and snug against your back, like the Little Chonk Maxine One or the K9 Sport Sack Plus 2. For flying and driving, a roomier carrier that lets you pet move around a bit (like the Timbuk2 Muttmover Luxe) is better—though make sure it still includes a safety harness or latch inside so your pup can't hop out unexpectedly.

Keep comfort in mind

Even if you only plan on using your dog carrier backpack for small stretches, comfort is still key. Look for bags with padded backs and shoulder straps so you'll feel less strain, and for heavier pups, chest and waist straps can make a big difference. And for your dog, you'll wanna ensure the bag has plenty of ventilation to maximize airflow and a nice, secure base so they can sit (or even lay) comfortably.
