The Cosmopolitan Trend Report: Fall 2023Hearst Owned

Twice a year, the fashion gods visit Earth for a month straight to dictate what us mere mortals should wear for the next seasons of our lives. The tricky thing is...only those with an encyclopedic memory can recall the fall 2023 trends that were first projected back in February of this year, when the biggest designers in the business put on massively impressive runway shows in New York, London, Paris, and Milan. But we’re shopping for our colder-weather wardrobes now, and so a refresher course is in order.

Enter: the Cosmopolitan trend report. Here we give you a guide to the coolest trends of the upcoming season (in this case, fall 2023) based on our favorite pieces from runways across the globe. We’re going deep on the clothing, shoe, bag, and jewelry designs that are about to dominate social media, the sidewalks, and beyond, and, of course, we’ve also collected ample examples you can shop right now, so you don’t miss out. No FOMO on our watch.

Want a little taste of what’s to come? As the temps drop this year, we’ll be slipping into sporty motocross-inspired looks, quirky semi-surrealist silhouettes, all the OTT jewels, and ludicrously capacious bags (Succession simply will not release its grip on our throats, even after all this time!). Now, go ahead: Scroll down, click on each trend to dive in, shop your heart out, and spread the word. These trends are too good to gatekeep!

The Clothing Trends

From hints of motocross (as seen on the Diesel and Marine Serre runways) to tuxedo dressing made casual (shown throughout Valentino’s collection), fashion for fall is all about being both casually throw-on-able and v-e-r-y exaggerated. For example: Loewe’s padded leather reminded us of our fave cartoons (you know, the Saturday morning variety), and the puffers at Rick Owen’s and Dion Lee’s shows were bigger—literally XXL—and cooler than ever. The Bag Trends

Baggage! We’ve all got some, don’t we? Thankfully, when you’re into fashion, it’s the good kind. Bags are a quick and easy way to carry your hot mess upgrade your wardrobe for a new season. This fall, you’re going to see bags sporting studs (oh yes, the grunge era has returned, folks), angles (sharp edges...all over the place), fuzz (simply the coziest trend ever), and novelty styles (do you see this banana bag?). Oh, and yeah, also bags that are big as f*ck. Anyway, cheers to our baggage being loud, chic, and ridiculously fun to carry. See all the fall 2023 bag trends in action right here.

The Jewelry Trends

Forget quiet luxury, we’re into the (tasteful) flashy stuff...We’re talking pearls, ear cuffs, brooches, stacked rings, and body jewelry. Yup, we’ve hit the jackpot.

I know what you’re thinking—your grandma wears brooches and pearls! Well, your grandma might be cooler than you. Channel Nana’s fashion serves by elevating your basic crewneck sweaters with key bling this season—look at Gucci and Paco Rabanne for inspiration. The Shoe Trends

We love classics with a twist, don’t we? Mary Janes and other timeless styles with modern updates are going to stomp all over your bank account this fall. Over-the-knee boots are also making a comeback in many silhouettes, from slouchy to more fitted, sock-like ones. Combat boots remain huge, with fun details like buckles and lace-ups. (Some of our absolute faves from the February runways were the Off-White pair, the Valentino ones topped off with feathers, and Max Mara’s buckle style.) Additionally, Western boots make an appearance with a futuristic touch....It’s getting v space cowboy up in here! We could go on and on, but you should just check out all the best fall 2023 shoe trends for yourself.
