HGTV's Mina Starsiak Hawk Gets Candid About Parenthood and Loss: "Hug Your People"

Raising a newborn is both wonderful yet exhausting at the same time. And as your sleep debt accumulates, compounded by the stress of doing everything just right, it's easy to lose sight of what's important. HGTV's Mina Starsiak Hawk can definitely relate. The Good Bones star, who welcomed her second child, Charlotte, in September 2020, took to Instagram last night to explain how a recent tragic loss brought her a newfound sense of gratitude.
"I should lay her down. Let her practice putting herself to sleep. She’s getting so good at it," Starsiak Hawk wrote alongside a photo of her cuddling her daughter. It's a train of thought that I'm sure many parents have had at some point. However, then the tone of Starsiak Hawk's post changed. The designer revealed that a friend close to her husband had unexpectedly passed away. As she watched the tribute with him, suddenly putting Charlotte down was the last thing on her mind.
She continued to explain how this heartbreaking moment put so much in perspective for her. "Tragic enough on its own, but he has a young boy. Also named Jack, like ours," she wrote of the late friend. "So for now, I’m going to let her fall asleep here and be thankful for what I have. It’s so much. And I’m so lucky," the mother continued. "Hug your people" reads the last line.
Starsiak Hawk's son, Jack, is currently two-years-old and big brother to Charlotte. Although you may or may not be a parent like Starsiak Hawk, her message reminds us all to take a step back and appreciate what we have in life—our loved ones included. While we might not be able to physically hug our people at the moment due to public health guidelines, a simple text message or card can go a long way.
