Creating a chic outdoor living space doesn't have to be expensive. Take it from HGTV's Jasmine Roth, who teamed up with Marshalls to style her outdoor space ahead of summer. The Help! I Wrecked My House star chatted with House Beautiful about her budget-friendly revamp and shared her best tips for creating your own outdoor oasis―even when space is tight.

"We just moved into this house at the end of last July," she tells House Beautiful, adding that with a newborn in tow (Roth and her husband Brett are parents to now one-year-old Hazel), decorating the home was easier said than done. While Roth worked on the interiors, the lack of an outdoor gathering space made her feel like the house wasn't her home yet: "It didn't feel personal." Because of the pandemic, she and her husband hadn't had too many guests over, but wanted to set up an area in the meantime where they could start making memories as a family.

When setting up this space, Roth noted that she wanted to be practical and opt for products "that are going to stand the test of time." As she explains: "I live in California. So it was really important to me to have quality items that would last all year round because this isn't just seasonal for us." However, with a lot of area to cover she knew it could get costly, which is why she turned to Marshalls for her backyard style needs. "It was so nice to find products that had such awesome prices because I was able to actually do my entire yard and not just like one little part of it," she says.

Prior to the upgrade, Roth's space consisted of a cabinet and a little bar area, but nothing else. Now, her backyard is the ultimate outdoor oasis. A few products in particular that she's loving right now include her chaise lounger chairs (and the colorful pillows sold separately that complement them!), her outdoor dishes, and outdoor wine glasses. In fact, her outdoor dishes have also become a staple inside the home, too. "That's how much I like them," she gushes. Below, you can shop products at Marshalls similar to those seen in Roth's backyard.

Roth also gives some tips on styling an outdoor space when you don't have a lot of square footage.

  1. If you have a lot of plants occupying your outdoor area, free up some space by buying hanging planters.

  2. If you plan to dine outside, invest in outdoor plates and glasses. That way, you don't have to worry if anything falls.

  3. Be realistic about what you're going to do in this area. If you just see it as a place to drink your coffee, then opt for a bistro set rather than a bulkier table.

  4. Remember not all chairs have to be on the ground. (See Roth's hanging chairs.)

  5. Keep it cozy! Just because your space is cramped, doesn't mean you have to be uncomfortable. Roth suggests outdoor cushions because they're easy to clean and make all the difference when you're sitting or laying down.

As for this summer, Roth's calendar is pretty empty. "We don't have a single trip booked, not a single flight, nothing," she says. "And that's why this, this yard refresh was so important to my family. Home is everything for us right now."
