Naturally, home renovation TV shows start with a house in need of updates and end with the rewarding reveal after a major overhaul. Once the paint has dried and the appliances are installed, the home is staged to give viewers and clients a better idea of the revamped residence’s dramatic transformation. But it turns out, the home staging that’s practically synonymous with HGTV is actually upsetting to some fans.

In a few recent Reddit threads, fans have discussed how they find home reveals on TV to be over staged and super cluttered. “[It’s] not just a breakfast tray on a bed with a book and a cup,” one person wrote. “It’s a breakfast tray on a throw on a bed with a book and a cup and a succulent and a string of giant wooden beads.”

Some likened TV home staging to a “Wayfair infomercial,” a HomeGoods explosion, and a Pinterest board materialized. “It looks ridiculous,” another wrote. “I'd rather enter an empty home and see what is what.”

Fans detailed the specific features that have irked them—from plants placed in showers to heavy table settings. “I know how to set a proper table, and a stack of dishes with a napkin in the goblet is not it,” one person wrote. “The table is not in a department store that is trying to show all of the dishes in a place setting.”

“It makes me anxious to see how much stuff there is, but obviously it works,” one person, referencing Unsellable Houses, added. “My theory is it works because it feels like a nice house but a house where people live. Normal staged homes tend to look like flips, and that can make people uncomfortable.”

Others say their thoughts on TV home staging depends on the show they're watching. One Reddit user wrote: “I love Hilary [Farr’s] reveal every time as well as Joanna Gaines. As for Unsellable Houses, I sometimes wince at the reveal or the color scheme. One of their diagonal kitchen islands just seemed so off. Christina [Hall] is way too high-end, as is Allison Victoria… Both seem to cater to the rich.”

Wherever you land on the TV home staging love-hate spectrum, the interior styling is essentially the icing on the cake. Without it, the completed renovation would have less of an exciting impact—and each project would be totally void of decor inspiration. That certainly wouldn't be ideal TV for design lovers.
