Co-host of HGTV’s Home Town (alongside her husband, Ben) and our honorary mom friend Erin Napier has a brand new children’s book releasing today, and it’s a sentimental tale of a brand new house brimming with life and love. But when the family who lives inside grows up and moves on, and the house’s paint starts to chip and fade and its boards start to creak, will it ever be a home again?

Officially releasing May 24th (but you can pre-order right now on Amazon with a price guarantee!), The Lantern House was a labor of love for Napier. Written in prose and richly illustrated by artist Adam Trest, the book is a heartfelt ode to the place we call home. “The houses we live in watch the story of our lives,” reads the intro. “Our houses are members of our family, there for all of it, holding and protecting us.” Even before its release, the book has already catapulted into the #1 spot in at least one Amazon category.

“The things we do in this life and in our home matter — and then someone else will put their mark on it too,” Napier said in an Instagram post about The Lantern House.

As Napier also says in the post, it’s literally her profession to give a house an identity and personality, so finding inspiration for the book was easy. Plus, as mom to 4-year-old Helen and 1-year-old Mae, we’re sure there are a ton of snuggly story times in the Napier household.

We love Trest’s artful illustrations, and the story is sweet and uplifting: “One day my front door opens and a family steps quietly inside, a little boy hiding behind his parents’ legs. ‘This could be home,’ they say. They are not afraid of my spiders and broken parts. Though I am dark and empty, they stay with me.”

If your heart felt a little tug at that last line, you’re not alone — we’re definitely feeling sentimental now. This one’s going to be a new bedtime favorite!
