Hersheypark’s Storm Runner turns 20 today

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) – Hersheypark’s rollercoaster Storm Runner opened 20 years ago today on May 8, 2004.

Riders are hydraulically launched from 0 to 72 mph in just two seconds to begin the ride, going 18 stories straight up and back down.

The iconic coaster then sends riders on a 135-foot cobra loop followed by barrel rolls and a flying snake dive before bringing its passengers back to Earth after just one minute of ride time.

How does Hersheypark’s Storm Runner launch its trains?

Storm Runner has more than 8,000 horsepower, making it speedier than the world’s quickest vehicle. It was the first rollercoaster to feature a dual-loading station with switch tracks, making for quicker transitions between runs.

Riders must be at least within the “Twizzlers” height category (54-60″) to ride Storm Runner.

Hersheypark is now open for its 118th season.
