Hershey motel owner celebrating 100th birthday

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) – If you spend any time in Hershey you may know the name Mary Simmons. This year she’s celebrating a milestone birthday, turning 100 years old.

Mary is the owner of the historic Simmons Motel on West Chocolate Ave. She and her husband bought the property in the 1950s and built the 33-room motel in the 1960s.

Mary has been a fixture at the hotel and in the community ever since. She credits her long life to one of her favorite activities, dancing.

“It keeps you young and keeps you active,” Mary said.

Ian Simmons, Mary’s grandson, says his grandparents “worked as a team” at the motel and his grandmother has “done a little of everything here her whole life.”

Guests have said they come back to the motel year after year to see Mary.

The Simmons family will be having a 100th birthday bash this weekend with plenty of dancing.
