Heroic Family Dog Saved Teen From Stroke As His Family Slept

On August 26, at about 5 a.m., Amanda Tanner and her husband were suddenly awakened by the family Border Collie, named Axel, jumping on their bed and pawning them.

The reason this amazing dog was so agitated? The couple’s 17-year-old son, Gabriel was having a stroke.

Today reports that Axel had led the parents downstairs, stopped in front of Gabriel's door, and refused to move. The healthy, athletic teen hadn't had any problems the day before, he had a slight headache but played video games before going to bed, and when Gabriel’s dad checked on the teen, he quickly realized something was wrong. The boy was slurring his speech and couldn’t feel his right side.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and can detect changes in the body's odors and chemicals, which might be associated with certain medical conditions, including strokes. When a person is experiencing a stroke, their body chemistry can change. Dogs, with their keen sense of smell, may detect these chemical changes.

Because the dog alerted the family so quickly, Gabriel was able to get medical help before the outcome was worse. As for Axel, the article states, "He’s now tasked with following Gabriel everywhere,” she says.

“He’s now sleeping with Gabriel more, and Gabriel’s doors are open so he can go in and out. He’s always been very sensitive to everything and everybody’s emotions at home.”

What a hero this dog is! This just goes to prove that we really don't deserve dogs. Thanks to Axel waking the family Gabriel was able to get the medical assistance he needed and is now on his way to recovery.
