My Hero Academia Is Getting a New Film

It’s safe to say that My Hero Academia is a pretty big series. Just about everywhere you go, you’re bound to see something MHA, whether that’s a figure in a game store or a cute little keychain on the backpack of a commuter. Its massive success as a manga saw it spawn an even more successful anime, a bunch of spin-offs, and of course, three movies.

A brand-new My Hero Academia film has been announced, the fourth such film since the anime started in 2016. Shueisha Inc. and Toho announced the film on the official My Hero Academia website, though the details are only in Japanese so far — an English release has not yet been confirmed.

The new film, like previous films, won’t strictly be canon, instead having an all-new, original story rather than being based on the manga. This is pretty typical for films based on ongoing anime, like One Piece, where it’s not really feasible to tell a story that impacts the rest of the anime.

That’s because the timeline for film production is a lot longer than an episode of anime, and delays are common. A delay to a movie that’s canon to the anime could set back the release of new episodes significantly. That said, the movie will be set roughly during the anime’s current timeframe, even if the events of it aren’t strictly canon.

Kohei Horikoshi, the original author of the manga, will be supervising the film’s production, and will work with the production team to create new characters. Like the anime and previous movies, it’ll be produced and animated by BONES and distributed by Toho.

“Four movies is really a surprise to me,” Horikoshi said in a statement on the official website (as translated by DeepL, “It reminds me of the Dragon Ball movies that were shown every year when I was a child. I would be happy if I could give back to even one boy or girl in the world the excitement and inspiration that manga films have given me.”

No date has been set for the film yet, with the website saying the title, the release date, and details will be announced in the future.
