Hermès RTW Spring 2024

It was “tomato girl summer” done the Hermès way.

Nadège Vanhee set a pastoral scene for her runway show, transforming the Garde Republicaine into a meadow of tall grasses ready for “an impromptu picnic, unhurried chatter, birdsong, a lack of constraints,” according to the show notes.

There was a lot of tomato red — and burgundy — hues that rule the TikTok fashion trend of picnic-appropriate dressing. Subtly winking at the social media trend would be on point for the brand, which has been working a lot with influencers. And this collection should continue to engage them.

Silk ribbed knit bra tops — that’s right, Hermès bra tops — were the foundations for the look involving tattersall cotton check full skirts and shorts with leather paper-bag waists, eyelet embroidered puff-sleeve dresses, and ribbed knit sets with contouring button plackets and cutouts highlighting the bare midriff.

On the more tailored side was washed silk twill suiting while pants with zippers tucked into front pleats, wrap leather apron skirts, and a gray trench with sleeves that unbuttoned and flapped in the breeze were also beautifully made. And following the success of the Oran, the new toe ring sandals shown with every look are sure to sell.

No fashion fireworks here, of course: These were new classics aimed at capturing the attention of the younger (but wealthy) customer. That approach seems to be working for Hermès, which reported sales up 28 percent in the second quarter of 2023, and ready-to-wear up 35.1 percent.

The rage for quiet luxury, the ability to cultivate customer loyalty while opening stores in smaller U.S. cities, are helping to boost the brand. Next up, a launch for the brand’s new eye shadow palettes in Palm Springs, Calif. No doubt all the influencers will be there.
