Watch out, Jersey City, because there’s a brand-new hero in town. Ms. Marvel is making her way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to her brand-new TV adaptation, and fans of her original comic book series have a lot to look forward to as Kamala Khan comes to life in a new way. But as with many adaptations, there are changes, especially when it comes to Kamala’s powers. Want to know just how different things are? And why Marvel decided to change it up?

Here is everything you need to know about Kamala Khan’s powers in Ms. Marvel.

What are Kamala’s powers in the TV series?

With only the first episode out, Kamala is just discovering her powers, so there’s a lot more to learn about what she can do. Right now, we can tell she has the ability to create physical cosmic energy that can be hurled like disks. She also has the ability to stretch her limbs while using cosmic energy in order to catch things.

In episode 2, we also find out that she is able to use the energy as platforms either choosing to slide them down on them or using them as steps to go higher or lower whenever she needs. Bruno also discovers that while the bracelet that her grandmother sent helped unlock her powers, the source is actually coming from within her. The exact origins of the bracelet are still unknown, but it looks like Kamran and his mom might know more than he originally led on.

What are Kamala’s powers in the comics?

In the comics, Kamala is actually an Inhuman, who had dormant abilities until Terrigen Mist activates them. Afterward, she has the ability to extend her limbs, almost like Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four. She is also able to shape-shift and regenerate quickly.

Why did the TV show change her powers?

While fans were hoping to see the exact same powers—especially since Inhumans have already been introduced in the MCU—Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had another idea when it came to bringing Kamala Khan to the small screen.

“We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation,” Kevin Feige told Empire. “[Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match. What we will learn about where those powers come from, and how they come about, is specific to the MCU.”

He also noted that some of her original powers are still there in brand-new ways. “You will see great comic splash panels in some of our action sequences,” he continued. “If you want big, giant hands and arms, well, they’re here in spirit, if not in stretchy, plastic-type ways.”

While it’s probably not the exact answer fans were looking for, at least we’ll find out more about these decisions as the show continues on!
