Here's Why Moff Gideon Was So Afraid of Luke in 'The Mandalorian'

Spoilers follow for the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian.
By now, pretty much every Star Wars fan in the world has seen "Chapter 16: The Rescue," the finale of The Mandalorian's second season which saw Din Djarin, Bo-Katan, Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, and Cara Dune mount a successful rescue of Grogu from the clutches of the villainous Moff Gideon.
Of course, nothing ever goes too smoothly on this show, and so it wasn't long before Team Mando found themselves trapped on the bridge of an Imperial ship, with Gideon stirring up some darksaber-related conflict between Din and Bo-Katan, and a horde of Dark Troopers punching their way through the blast doors.
What followed was a nail-biting sequence as a hooded stranger made their way through the ship, taking down the troopers with a lightsaber. When the doors finally opened, he was revealed to be Luke Skywalker, hero of the original trilogy, and Gideon looked terrified.
This is for good reason. As a new video on the Star Wars Theory channel succinctly explains, Luke has kind of an epic reputation in this fictional universe: "He destroyed the first Death Star. He destroyed the second Death Star. He killed the Emperor of the galaxy. And to the Empire's knowledge, he killed Darth Vader."
With The Mandalorian taking place only a few short years after the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi, it absolutely tracks that Luke Skywalker would have become a figure of almost mythic proportions in Republic ranks, but also as a kind of Jedi boogeyman for Imperial forces.
The Jedi may have been largely relegated to the shadows in The Mandalorian, but Gideon would have known enough about their culture and the Force while conducting his experiments on Baby Yoda to be aware that if a Skywalker showed up, things were about to get real.
