When it comes to appearances, the Kardashian-Jenner clan is clearly doing something right. With silky hair and clear skin, each one consistently looks fabulous, so whenever they let out beauty secret or two, we’re all ears.

The latest member of the famous family to spill her at-home beauty routine is Kourtney Kardashian. As a mom of three, it’s amazing she manages to look so put together all the time. So what’s her secret? According to an interview with Cosmopolitan, she insists on always using satin pillowcases.

“I always sleep with a satin pillowcase and I have done it for like 20 years,” Kardashian explains, adding that her makeup routine only takes about five minutes (contouring included).

While some may think that sleeping on a satin pillowcase is an unnecessary luxury, it’s true that many top stylists, such as Edward Tricomi of Warren-Tricomi Salons, believe that sleeping with a silk pillowcase is one of the best things you can do for your hair. Satin is gentle on the hair and helps to diminish the appearance of frizz after tossing and turning, since the surface is so soft.

And although Kardashian credits her pillowcases for her silky locks, it’s also important to note how they can work wonders on skin as well. While cotton pillowcases absorb moisture from the skin, satin locks moisture in, allowing your night creams to work better. Also, since cotton is so rough, the constant pulling on your dermis during the night can lead to fine lines and wrinkles, whereas satin allows the skin to glide along the surface without any pulling.

Keep in mind, both silk and satin pillowcases work to reap the same hair and skin benefits, so don’t be deterred if you come across silk pillowcases rather than satin when shopping for your next beauty splurge. Many times the only difference here is the price of the product since pure silk can be very expensive. Instead, opt for satin when looking for a more budget-friendly purchase.

Try the Betty Dain Satin Standard Pillowcase ($7) as a great option for copying Kardashian’s choice in fabric. Otherwise, if you’re looking for a bit more pampering, treat yourself to a silk version like the Slip Silk Pillowcase ($79) for some extra luxury. Yes, it’s expensive, but the price of waking up with better hair and softer skin is worth it.
