Here's where to find Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Columbia

Cinco de Mayo historically marks the result of a military battle more than 160 years ago. Today, it more is an opportunity, at least in the U.S., to enjoy drinks and Mexican food.

For those looking for Cinco de Mayo-related celebrations, here's where you can find them in Columbia and even a couple more unique offerings.

Columbia Community Band spring concert

The Columbia Community Band hosts its spring concert 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hickman High School auditorium at 1104 N. Providence Road.

The concert will feature the music of Mexico and will welcome Angela Manzo as its special tuba soloist. The Columbia Community Band is under the direction of Denis Swope and one of the band's members will guest conduct at the Cinco de Mayo concert, Craig Young.

The concert is free to enter, but space is limited.

Drinko de Mayo at Rose Music Hall

Latin Night Como will host Drinko de Mayo Saturday at Rose Music Hall, 1013 Park Ave. Doors open 8 p.m. with DJ Jonny Fuzion spinning records at 9 p.m.

This is an 18-up event.

Rose Music Hall is a cashless venue. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster ahead of Saturday for $15 or $18 at the door. For those carrying bags, they must be 12 by 6 by 12 inches and will be searched upon entry. Exceptions are made for those carrying medical equipment or what is used by nursing mothers.

Masquerade in support of Rainbow House

Rainbow House, the children's emergency shelter, is hosting its 14th annual masquerade ball starting 6 p.m. Saturday at the Reynolds Alumni Center on the University of Missouri Campus.

"This special celebration is an opportunity for Rainbow House staff, volunteers and supporters to gather and recognize the hard work and accomplishments of the past year," the Facebook event page notes.

Rainbow House encourages guests to put on their sombrero and get ready to shake some maracas.

Restaurants with listed events

Mi Jalisco Mexican Restaurant at 901 Safari Drive, Suite 101, will have DJs spinning music, margaritas and more during its regular hours Saturday and Sunday.

Casa Maria's Mexican Cantina, 1305 Grindstone Parkway, Suite 115, during its regular business hours Saturday and Sunday will have its food truck and margarita bar onsite, along with a specialized food menu, Patron Party and a DJ.

Those wanting to celebrate elsewhere could check out La Dona Mexican Restaurant, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at 510 Ellis Blvd. Unit F in Jefferson City. Guests can expect colorful decorations and vibrant music.
