From Woman's Day

When it comes to going gray, there are typically two kinds of people—those who embrace it and those who avoid it like the plague.

For several years, author Anne Kreamer was part of the latter group, dying her hair everything from "auburn and aubergine" to "jet-black" in order to keep those dreaded grays at bay.

It wasn't until she saw herself in a photo with her friend and her daughter that she started to see her the hue of her mane differently. In her book Me, My Hair, and I: Twenty-seven Women Untangle an Obsession, she explains:

My friend Akiko has gray hair, my daughter Kate has brown hair, and there's me with this . . . mahogany helmet...I thought, 'I've got to stop this!

After noticing that her grays gradually started peeking through faster in-between salon visits, she decided enough was enough. Aware of people's varied opinions during her "growing-out phase," she was elated when all of her hair finally grew into its lustrous, silver color, 18 months later.

The freeing experience made her realize how much she was missing out on during all that time she was so concerned about booking her next salon appointment. Most importantly, her new hue gave her a different, vibrant outlook, giving her more confidence than ever.

I think that gray hair illustrates self-confidence and truthfulness — saying to anyone in the room, 'I am precisely who I say I am, I have lots of experience that would be beneficial to you. Interested?' Gray hair also makes us memorable. People I've met once can remember me in a crowd because I'm often the only woman with hair my color in the room.

While she was working on a previous book, Going Gray, a social experiment on Match.com (she made two fake accounts, one with gray hair and the other with dyed hair) led her to realize that the belief that gray hair makes a woman unattractive is basically complete nonsense. "It's women who have convinced each other that they're not attractive with gray hair. Men, they [couldn't] care less, as long as you're the basic footprint of people they find attractive."
