A Source Claims Taylor Swift Initiated Breakup With Joe Alwyn

It seems like Taylor Swift's "Lover" era has come to a close after multiple reports revealed that she and her longtime partner, Joe Alwyn, broke up after six years of dating in April 2023. The pair reportedly met after the Met Gala in 2016 and went public with their romance in November 2017 when the Grammy-winning artist released her album, Reputation. They famously kept details about their relationship under wraps, which led to speculation that they had quietly gotten engaged. So, after multiple songs written about and with Joe, it may come as a surprise that the couple may have called it quits.

Entertainment Tonight broke the news with details from an anonymous source that was allegedly close to the couple. The split was "not dramatic," and according to the insider, it's the reason why Joe hasn't attended any of Taylor's shows on her Eras Stadium Tour despite a March 2023 report from People that stated he planned to attend. The source told ET that Taylor and Joe's relationship "had just run its course."

On April 11, another source revealed that Taylor was allegedly the one who initiated the end of the relationship. "Taylor and Joe are in totally different places in their lives right now," the source told ET. "It was more of Taylor's decision to break up, but both of them realized that they weren't completely right for one another. They had been together for such a long time and were spending so much time together, but their personalities were just too different. Joe is more introverted, shy, and quiet."

Not long after ET published their exclusive, People also confirmed the split with their own report, saying that "differences in their personalities" led to the end of their romance. "They've had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together," People's insider said, adding that the pair "weren't the right fit for one another."

The People report also revealed that Taylor and Joe first "fell in love" when she stayed out of the public eye in 2016 and 2017, respectively. "They had plenty in common and fell in love in a safe bubble while she was retreating from the world during Reputation," the source explained, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic's lockdown helped them in "growing their relationship."

During quarantine, Joe co-wrote several songs with Taylor under the pseudonym William Bowery. The songs include six tracks on Folklore, three songs on Evermore, and "Sweet Nothing" on Midnights. Once COVID-19 restrictions loosened up, Taylor headed back to work in a larger capacity, attending awards shows like the Grammys and iHeartRadio Music Awards. Per People, the Boy Erased actor "struggled with Taylor's level of fame," causing him to "grow apart" from her. They had allegedly been "talking about marriage as recently as a few months ago," but "Taylor didn't see them working out in the long run."

Despite speculation throughout their relationship that the couple had secretly gotten married, another source confirmed to Page Six that it's "fully not true." They added that the "Lavender Haze" singer is "100% single" and not romantically linked to anyone since the split.

"They are friendly. She doesn't have anything bad to say about Joe," adds the insider. "They just grew apart. Taylor is staying very focused on her tour right now."

Amid reports, neither Taylor nor Joe's reps have commented on their relationship status.
