Here's What We Know About Dasha, Villanelle's Former Mentor on 'Killing Eve'
The following story contains spoilers for the first episode of the third season of Killing Eve.
On the first episode of the new season of Killing Eve, we're introduced to a new, mysterious, and all-around violent character by the name of Dasha.
As it turns out, she was a former mentor to Villanelle, though the details of their relationship are unclear.
Given their initial fight, it's safe to say their relationship likely didn't end on a positive note.
So far, the third season of Killing Eve is off to an especially bloody and unpredictable start. And in the first episode, we've also been introduced to a slew of new characters, many of whom are likely to become major players in the upcoming season, assuming Villanelle (Jodie Comer) doesn't immediately and creatively murder them first.
One such character is Dasha (Harriet Walter), who we meet at the top of the first episode in a flashback. In 1974, Dasha, then, is a young competitive gymnast. We witness her being berated by her coach and kissing a young man—who she then violently beats into unconsciousness and pours a bag of chalk into his mouth (which explains Villanelle's crafty killing technique later in the episode).
Flash-forward to a scene from Villanelle's (or whichever alias she's assumed) wedding. During the cake-cutting portion of the night, she sees a (now older) Dasha standing in the back of the room. Naturally, Villanelle runs, tackles her, and breaks a table in the process. "This is my special day," she tells Dasha, mid-chokehold. "Sincere congratulations," Dasha replies.
As it turns out, Dasha and Villanelle go way back, even pre-Villanelle's days as a professional assassin; we learn Dasha actually trained Villanelle (and other assassins) and is still an operative for The Twelve. We also learn Dasha trains young gymnasts in Spain, too, with the same kind of unpleasantness she experienced as a gymnast when she was younger.
Now, she wants to convince Villanelle into reclaiming her job for The Twelve. Dasha admits that if she can convince Villanelle into taking her job back, she'll finally "be sent home to Russia," though a skeptical viewer might believe there's more here at stake for her than she wants to admit.
The relationship between Dasha and Villanelle isn't all anger and violence, judging by their interactions, but it's clear there wasn't closure. We should expect a whole lot more violence as the season, and details of their relationship, continue to unfold.
