Jennifer Lopez Talks 'Hustlers' Oscar Snub
Oprah Winfrey has been making the rounds with her 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus tour, and this weekend, she made a stop in Los Angeles, where she spoke with Superbowl star Jennifer Lopez at the Forum Arena in Inglewood. Lopez, who has already been killing 2020 with some stunning looks and performances, shared her feelings with Winfrey about her Oscars snub for her movie Hustlers.
"I was a little sad," she told Winfrey. "There were so many articles, I got so many good notices—more than ever in my career—and there was a lot of 'She's going to get nominated for an Oscar, it's going to happen. If she doesn't [get it], you're crazy.' I'm reading all the articles going, 'Oh my God, could this happen?' And then it didn't and I was like, 'Ouch.'"
She added that the snub not only affected her but the people who been supporting her for decades: "Most of my team has been with me for years, 20, 25 years—and I think they had a lot of hopes on that and they wanted it too, so I felt like I let everyone down a little bit."
Lopez, who plays pole-dancing force Ramona Vega in the 2019 film, met a lot of praise for a performance that was, in a lot of ways, groundbreaking. When her fans did not see her name on the list of 2020 Oscar nominees, they were livid. Although the Oscar news might have been a letdown for Lopez, she's already had some big wins this year, such as her show-stopping Super Bowl performance.
When Super Bowl viewers, particularly parents of young children, criticized her halftime performance with fellow Latina singer Shakira, Lopez, also a mom, came back with a strong defense.
"I think that’s honestly silliness," she told Variety of her critics. "Both of us are really respectful performers who are moms and have kids and are very conscious of what we do," Lopez said. "We (put on) a show that I believe was a celebration of women and our Latino culture that I think was really well reserved. And that small faction of people who want to be negative about it, I can’t even let in."
