You’ve perfected your multi-step skincare regimen and your complexion has never looked better, but if your beauty routine concludes there you’re missing a trick. The muscles and tissues beneath your skin also have a big impact on facial aesthetics, and by stimulating them regularly with a handheld microcurrent device you can achieve a lifted, more contoured look without the need for plumping injectables like filler.

These beauty tools use low-voltage electrical currents to gently contract your facial muscles, lifting and tightening them over time similarly to how bicep curls sculpt your arms or lunges build your legs. Natalie Aguilar, an LA-based licensed aesthetician and dermatological nurse who works out of Kami Parsa, MD’s Beverly Hills office calls them “revolutionary."

Aguilar indicates that with a few minutes of daily use, microcurrent devices can offer a non-invasive, pain-free solution for achieving a more lifted, age-defying appearance. As is often the case with beauty treatments, consistency is key to seeing the results you want. We asked her to break down exactly how the microcurrent device works, and what to expect if you commit to using it every day for 30 days.

What Is a Microcurrent Device?

A microcurrent device is the little sister to professional microcurrent facials, which are usually carried out by an aesthetician using a higher-voltage machine. These hand-held microcurrent devices are designed for convenient daily use at home.

You simply glide the tool over your cheekbones, jawline, and forehead—basically anywhere apart from your delicate eye socket area—and it sends tiny electrical currents through the muscles and tissues, helping to tone the face and boost collagen and elastin production.

While they’re not cheap—a microcurrent device will run you several hundred dollars unless you manage to snag one in a sale—they’re worth the investment. According to Aguilar, adding a microcurrent device to your routine will help rejuvenate your skin, sculpt your facial contours, and promote a youthful glow.

What Are the Benefits of a Microcurrent Device?

One of the main selling points of the microcurrent device is its anti-aging benefits. Over time, the muscles of the face begin to weaken, making the skin appear looser and more wrinkled. By “working out” those muscles using microcurrent technology they retain their volume and strength better, creating the appearance of more sculpted facial features.

The machine also appears to boost circulation and cell regeneration, helping you achieve a more radiant complexion with each use. Additionally, Aguilar says, a microcurrent device can help promote lymphatic drainage, reducing fluid build-up in the face to create a more contoured effect.

Can You Overuse a Microcurrent Device?

The short answer is, yes, it is possible to overuse this device. Aguilar says she once overused her professional, in-office microcurrent device to the point where relatives thought she’d had cheek filler. “I now only use my device whenever I feel I need a little lift and contour."

That being said, overuse is highly unlikely with a device designed for home use. Brands like NuFace use a much smaller amount of microcurrent, and have specific attachments designed to target the delicate eye and lip muscles, preventing overstimulation from occurring.

Is It OK to Use a Microcurrent Device Every Day?

Most at-home microcurrent devices are designed for daily use—at least initially. A good routine, according to NuFace, is to use the device once a day for up to 20 minutes for the first 60 days.

After that, you can drop down to using it two or three times a week to maintain your results. Aguilar advises you check that the device you’re purchasing is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which also provides reassurance that it’s safe for regular use.

Is a Microcurrent Device Safe for Long-Term Use?

While microcurrent devices are approved for long-term use, there are some contraindications, AKA symptoms or medical conditions that make microcurrent treatments potentially harmful. Those with a cardiac pacemaker or cochlear implant, in particular, should steer clear. A microcurrent device can interfere with the functionality of these devices.

These tools are also unsuitable for pregnant people and those with epilepsy or seizures. To be on the safe side, speak with a healthcare provider or aesthetician for guidance before beginning your microcurrent routine.

Microcurrent Device Results, Week by Week

We’ve already established that consistency is key to achieving a noticeable outcome with your microcurrent device. But Aguilar says you can enhance results further when you pair your treatments with a top-notch skincare regimen that includes moisturizing, sun protection, and other anti-aging products that can help maximize the benefits and results.

“It's also important to note that individual results will vary dramatically depending on factors such as skin type, age, skincare routine, and the specific microcurrent device used,” she adds. With that in mind, here’s what Aguilar says you can expect week-by-week with daily use.

Expectations after week 1

After week one, you should see a very slight improvement in both the tone and texture of your skin. You also may notice your skin is better hydrated due to improved product absorption.

Expectations after week 2

After week two, you may experience a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It's also possible that your skin will appear more radiant overall.

Expectations after week 3

After week three, you may experience an increase in firmness, especially around the areas that typically tend to sag a little more like the eye area and jawline. Improvements in facial contours and definition also will be more noticeable. Additionally, your skin may appear smoother and more plump with fine lines visibly improved.

Expectations after week 4

One month in is where consistent use really starts to pay off and the compliments flood in. After week four or five, your will notice a significant enhancement in your skin's firmness and elasticity. Improvement in facial contours and a more lifted appearance also will be visible; and fine lines and wrinkles are greatly reduced.

What Happens When You Stop Using the Microcurrent Device?

In the same way you don’t become instantly unfit after skipping a few workouts, you probably won’t notice an immediate difference when you stop using your microcurrent device. However, after a month or two the benefits will gradually diminish and you’ll notice your face returning to its pre-treatment state.

The advantage of investing in a home-use microcurrent tool is that you don’t have to remember to schedule pricey in-office maintenance treatments. Just reach for your device a couple of times a week while catching up on your favorite show to keep your face looking sculpted and rejuvenated indefinitely.
