Kate Middleton broke her silence amid mounting speculation on Friday, March 22, revealing that she's been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing preventative chemotherapy.

According to the Sunday Times, Kate filmed the video on Wednesday, March 20, and "went to see the King for lunch the following day," who offered his encouragement and support.

“A factor in their decision to go public would have been the great warmth and affection received by the King as a result of his announcement," a source says. "It meant a huge amount to him. In some ways it provided a template. For the King, the issue was how to act quickly to share the information with an audience of millions, while for the princess the core audience was their three young children and a message that had to be sensitively handled at the right time before it could be shared with the wider public.”

The Telegraph also spoke to a source who said Kate decided to record her video because she was "encouraged by how warmly the King’s public statement on his health was received, and the positive impact it has had on others going through the same thing." Another insider added that “She’s got a steely determination inside her. Once she’s put her mind to something, there’s no stopping her. She’s tough.”

While Kate filmed the video last week, she decided to make it several weeks prior. Per The Sun editor Victoria Newton on BBC1, "It was actually, I understand, that the Princess made the decision two weeks ago that she was going to do this public statement. The key thing for her as a mother, the priority was protecting those three children. She didn't want them going to school, being asked even more than they already were."

When it comes to Kate's statement, a palace source confirmed to People that Kate “wrote every word herself,” while a friend said the same: “She wrote the words herself, delivered it personally and wanted to decide when the time was right to hit the world with this news.”
