The novel is titled Nineteen Steps. It is unclear what this title refers to, but we do know that the story is described as an “epic story of love, loss, and secrets.”

What is Millie Bobby Brown's Book About?

Nineteen Steps is a historical novel set in London during World War II. It follows Nellie Morris, an 18-year-old girl who is trying to navigate growing up during the war. It is 1942 and every day she feels the threat of an enemy attack. Nellie works hard to lead an ordinary life. She works at the mayor's office and spends the nights at the local pub with her best friend. Then, Nellie meets Ray, an American airman stationed nearby and the two develop a close relationship. But right as Nellie and Ray are ready to begin their life together, an air raid changes everything.

Publisher William Morrow says, “As the truth about that night is revealed, Nellie’s world is torn apart. When it seems all hope is lost, Nellie finds that against all odds, love and happiness can triumph."

In an Instagram post, Millie explained the book "is a historical novel about an amazing, courageous 18-year-old woman called Nellie Morris, who lives with her family in Bethnal Green, in London’s East End, while the second world war rages on around them. When a tragic accident occurs during an air raid one night, the consequences are catastrophic - and life will never be the same again for Nellie."

What Does Millie Have to Say About the Story?

The story is very personal to Millie. She actually drew from her own family history when writing the book. The novel draws on inspiration from the stories Millie's grandmother Ruth told her. Ruth was a survivor of the 1943 Bethnal Green tube incident, which left 173 dead and dozens injured. According to BBC, this was the single largest loss of civilian life during World War II in the UK.

“Inspired by my Nanny Ruth, this book is very personal and close to my heart,” Millie shared in a statement. “I grew up listening to stories about her time living through the war. I’m honored to keep her story alive.”

In a recent Instagram video, Millie revealed the cover of Nineteen Steps. "I am so excited to share the final artwork for my upcoming book, Nineteen Steps! This story is so personal to me and I love being able to bring you in for these early looks. Nineteen Steps is inspired by my own family’s experience during World War II and is also a story of love, longing, and loss," she wrote in the post.
