Some things about Survivor never change, like host Jeff Probst's constant stream of sick burns during Immunity Challenges. Other things vary from season to season, including the location where the hit CBS reality show is filmed.

For a show about roughing it on a tropical island (and trying not to get voted out by your peers), the location can make or break a contestant's time there. There are hot days and cold, rainy nights, plus bugs and other wildlife that'll bite and crawl over your body at night. And that's not even mentioning all that sand. "This is the worst environment some of us have ever experienced," says Cirie Fields, who placed third in season 16.

Of course there's the sweet prize of $1 million at the end of the day, but it takes a person with serious grit to forage for food, any food in a location they've never been to. That could mean something as simple as drinking coconut water, or picking the meat out of a tiny crab (the contestants are also given rice on the show, along with more substantial food as rewards for challenges). And with physical and mental games that take everything you've got, players have to keep a level head while spending at most, 39 days on the island.

Since its premiere in 2000, Survivor has been located in warm destinations all over the globe, from the Amazon to the islands of French Polynesia. The long-running show used to change locations on more of a season-to-season basis—with a few repeats—but since Season 33 in 2016, Survivor has filmed in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji.

And if it were up to Probst, Survivor would never leave Fiji. “I hope we stay here forever,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2017, praising the "incredibly beautiful water" and "beaches that are amazing."

Additionally, there weren't as many options for filming locations as there were back in 2000. “It’s been two decades. It’s a different world," Probst added. "There are not as many places we can go for lots of reasons—the economy, population, political unrest, weather patterns.”
