Here’s How Donald Trump—And Others—Reacted to His Impeachment on Twitter

President Donald Trump was officially impeached on Wednesday night on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, specifically relating to his attempt to instigate a Ukrainian investigation to discredit his U.S. political rivals.

Trump is the third president in U.S. history to be impeached, after Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. The impeachment doesn’t necessarily suggest he will be removed from office—the next step is a Senate vote expected sometime in January, in which, as Vogue’s Lynn Yaeger put it last night, “there is virtually no path to victory for the Democrats.”

True to form, Trump commented furiously on social media, retweeting supporters seemingly at random and sharing petulant memes about the results of the impeachment investigation.

On Thursday morning, he lambasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has left the timing of the Senate trial up in the air: “Pelosi feels her phony impeachment HOAX is so pathetic she is afraid to present it to the Senate,” he wrote.

Trump wasn’t alone in taking to Twitter to share thoughts about the huge political event. While this is a serious and historical moment for the country, it was clear plenty of Americans wanted to let off steam on social media when the news broke. The excitement in the air over the impeachment isn’t surprising; after all, this is the outcome many Trump opponents have dreamed of since they protested en masse following his election. Where impeachment once seemed like a pie-in-the-sky liberal pipe dream, Trump has now officially been condemned by a U.S. governing body, and even if the victory for Democrats is largely symbolic, symbolism can be a powerful force.
