The second season of Sex Education has been out for approximately five minutes, but the internet is already ready to barge down Netflix's door demanding new episodes ASAP. Like me, it seems like Twitter would risk it all for these British teens. They make me laugh, they make me cry, they make me remember the bullsh*t I was taught in health class and wish it had been as comprehensive and empathetic as Otis' sex clinic and Jean's vagina workshops.
Quick recap: Season 2 further complicates the lives of the students at Moordale when a chlamydia scare leads to Otis' mother Jean showing up in the school halls. Not only is there nothing on the planet less embarrassing than your mother lecturing your school on sexual health, this is also bad for business! The new episodes throw us some new romantic endeavors and failures—the show is about Sex Education, not heart education, after all. There's also a bit of a #MeToo storyline that highlights how sexual assault and/or harassment happens to virtually everyone, even if not everyone's story is exactly the same.
Now that you're all caught up, here's what you need to know about the future of Sex Education.
Is Season 3 even happening?
Yes! Thank's to this tweet that Netflix just dropped, they are gracing us with a 3rd season! Phew! Shoutout to Principal Groff for breaking the good news!
let’s talk about sex baby, let’s talk about season 3 (of Sex Education) pic.twitter.com/qvRIiXwp9B— Netflix UK & Ireland (@NetflixUK) February 10, 2020
When will season 3 air?
I'm just following patterns here, but if season 1 dropped in January 2019 and season 2 dropped in January 2020, then it's probably safe to assume we'll see season 3 in...January 2021.
Who's coming back for season 3?
Barring disaster, we can assume that series regulars Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emma Mackey will all return. As well as the supporting cast, because let's be honest, sometimes you're way more invested in what's going on with Adam, Lily, Ola, Jackson, and Aimee than the latest installment of Otis and Maeve's soap opera.
Based on what happened to Jean in the season 2 finale, it's likely that Mikael Persbrandt will be back as Jakob in a season 3. It's unclear whether or not we'll see Maeve's mother (Anne-Marie Duff) after Maeve did that in the finale. However, this hopefully isn't the last we've seen of Maeve's cute neighbor Isaac, played by George Robinson.
Is there a trailer yet?
Nope! So you'll just have to rewatch that video of Principal Groff to keep yourself busy.
Do we know literally anything else?
Well, the Sex Education cast does have some exciting projects coming up in 2020 that can take your mind off this brutal wait for the confirmed third season. You can see Gillian Anderson play the decidedly un-sexy Margaret Thatcher in The Crown season 4. Emma Mackey, on the other hand, will be interrogated by Kenneth Branagh in Death On The Nile.
Other than that, we're going to have to patient while you await the drop of season 3...and maybe convince more people to get with the program and watch the first two seasons of Sex Education while we do.
