Henry Winkler Reveals When 'Barry' Is Coming to an End

And it's a lot sooner than the actor would have hoped.
Henry Winkler shared some unfortunate news predicting the end of the HBO show Barry.
On last night's Emmy Awards Red Carpet, the actor—who portrays Gene Cousineau, an acting teacher, and mentor of Barry Block (Bill Hader)—was asked about the inevitable end to the dark comedy, and his answer made some fans wish that interviewers never asked in the first place.
When Variety asked Winkler how many seasons he thinks Barry will run, the 76-year-old actor firmly responded: “Four.”
When interviewers followed up and asked the former Happy Days star what made him believe that, he responded: “Because Bill and Alec [a reference to Alec Berg, the show's co-creator] never try to stretch–and I don't mean stretch by 'make better'," he said before quickly clarifying, "I mean, they never try to stuff something that doesn't–they don’t want to push it.”
Funny he should say that because not too long ago, the actor shared a snap from the production of Season 4. So, if Winkler is correct, the upcoming season of Barry will be the show's last.
Despite the glum news, fans still respect the showrunners' decision to end the show when it feels right and natural versus providing viewers with overkill.
"I’m sure me and a lot of my friends would love to see Barry go on for more than 4 seasons but I mean……..it would be 4 seasons of perfection as intended by the creators so you can’t argue with that," one Twitter user admitted.
Another quipped: "good, it sucks when things go on too long and get bad."
"Smart move, end on top. Would also be open to them going for like 20 seasons...gotta do one or the other though," a different tweet read.
"sad but i appreciate this choice," someone else surmised.
Others, however, hypothesized over what this could mean for Season 4 and its highly-fawned-over cast.
"if barry ends without sarah goldberg and anthony carrigan getting emmys for sally and hank im gonna do terrible things," one fan joked.
"would be pretty funny if Hader and Berg were just lying to Winkler about ending the show and it actually goes on for like 7 more seasons," someone conspired.
The actor seemed a little more disappointed with his own statements than many fans, as he later added that he didn't want Barry to end.
“Because now I’m an actor back on the street again,” Winkler said with a grin.
So far, Winkler's statements are just speculation. TVLine reported that HBO declined to comment on the validity of the actor's statements. A source close to the show also hinted that nothing has been confirmed, as per the outlet.
The premiere date for Season 4 of Barry has not yet been released. Season 1 through 3 of the show can be streamed via HBO.
