Henry Golding—and his Watch—Are Pure Class

Imagine your perfect holiday party. The dream that starts with you gliding into the room, receiving a tumbler full of a brown liquor you happily sip on, and pulling on a velvet jacket with deadly sharp peak lapels. The coup de grâce? A watch: it’s gold, it’s beautiful, it’s inspired by deadly war machines that rumbled through the streets in the 1910s, and it’s made by Cartier. The Cartier Tank is an enduring icon—and for that reason, it’s also the perfect watch for a man like Henry Golding, who oozes Hollywood glamour and classic good looks. And it’s the perfect watch for the season. Even though more elegant watches have largely fallen out of favor as dress codes have eased and men have turned to steel timepieces as their everyday (and evening) companions, there is not a piece that will look better with holiday-party attire—cashmere turtlenecks! velvet jackets!—than a watch like the Tank. Also this week: Ryan Reynold’s wears another great dress watch and Young Thug shows off a very blinged-out Rolex.

Henry Golding’s Cartier Tank

Henry Golding only collects classics. So far in this column, we’ve spotted him wearing the Patek Philippe 5711 Nautilus, an IWC Portugieser, and now a Cartier Tank. The Tank has been a favorite of dozens of celebrities over time. “I don’t wear a Tank to tell the time,” Andy Warhol famously said. “In fact, I never wind it. I wear a Tank watch because it’s the watch to wear.” Golding proves that’s still true in 2019.

Ryan Reynolds’s Chopard L.U.C GMT ONE

This is Chopard’s take on a GMT watch, or one designed to track two different time zones. While brands like Rolex use a two-tone bezel, Chopard ingeniously uses differing shades of chocolate brown and creamy white on the actual face of the watch to create a contrast between time zones. The design gives the watch a dressy look, versus the sportier appearance of other GMTs. Ryan Reynolds actually wears a pair of Chopard watches in his new movie 6 Underground—either the brand made an impression on the actor or he’s so deep in character he still thinks he’s the leader of a vigilante squad set on killing a dictator. Oh, God, someone wake him up!

Travis Scott’s Richard Mille RM011 Asia Boutique Exclusive

There’s a reason athletes like Rafael Nadal and Odell Beckham Jr. are able to wear the Richard Mille while playing in their respective sports. The watches are implausibly light, durable, and often come with a rubber bracelet. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a Travis Scott show, but the dude gives it all during live performances. His concerts have plenty in common with the most strenuous of athletic achievements—an activity only a Richard Mille like this RM011, which was exclusive to the brand’s Asian boutiques, can survive.

Adam Driver/Charlie Barber’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39

Marriage Story is a heartbreaking movie about two people slowly falling out of love. But, if you’re a watch-obsessed idiot like myself, you might not have been able to stop wondering what timepiece the auteur playwright, certified genius, one-time Timeout New York cover star, and recent divorcée played by Adam Driver would wear. In the opening of the movie, Scarlett Johansson’s character lists “doesn’t look in the mirror too often” and “doesn’t dress embarrassing” as two of Charlie’s positive qualities, and the simple watch he wears backs that up. It’s an Oyster Perpetual, one of Rolex’s starter watches—one that doesn’t look embarrassing but requires absolutely no fuss.

Anthony Davis’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Rainbow

This Rolex “Rainbow” is the kind of watch you can only wear when you’re flying high at 22-3, like Davis’s Los Angeles Lakers. This is a fun watch, a celebratory watch: the bezel is covered in 36 baguette-cut diamonds, more diamonds stand in for hour markers, and there are yet more gems along the lugs. Not to mention that the diamonds across the bezel create a rainbow effect to make for what we’ve called the funnest Rolex on the planet. Anthony Davis, playing like an MVP and viable NBA champion, can get away with it.

Young Thug’s Rolex Sky-Dweller

Underneath all those diamonds, Young Thug is wearing the classic Rolex model: the Sky-Dweller. The 24-hour dial at the middle is supposed to make it easy for the wearer to read the hour at just a glance but I can’t imagine looking down at this watch and being anything but blinded. It seems fitting that Thug wore the watch to the Uncut Gems premiere in Los Angeles—but, we’ll note, sir, that these gems appear decidedly cut.
