Henry Cavill has announced that he will not be continuing as the World of DC's Superman, after all.

The actor shared the news himself in an Instagram post on Wednesday (December 14), where he confirmed he'd been told during a meeting with DC that the studio's new bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are working on a new movie about a younger Clark Kent.

This situation is likely to come as a huge surprise to fans since Cavill only recently returned to the role for a cameo in Black Adam after years of uncertainty over his DC future.

"The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that," Cavill wrote on Instagram. "James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them, and all involved with the new universe, the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."

The Man of Steel actor acknowledged that while he will now "mourn for a bit", he wants fans to remember that "Superman is still around".

Gunn underscored that fact in his own social media statement where he essentially confirmed reports he's writing a draft of a new Superman movie.

"Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” Gunn wrote on Twitter.

"Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

"But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future."

It's a double blow for Cavill who announced he was leaving The Witcher at the same time as his Superman return. He's been replaced by Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth for the upcoming fourth series.

The DC world is currently undergoing a big shake-up since Gunn and Safran were named as the new heads of DC studios.

There’s been recent reports that the pair opted to turn down Wonder Woman 3, with director Patty Jenkins’ current plans not aligning with the new direction the studio is set to take.

There have also been other unconfirmed rumours that the heroes assembled by Zack Snyder for his Justice League movie will also be abandoned and have new heroes cast.

It's yet unknown what will happen to the DC movies filmed under previous boss Walter Hamada, including Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which were all slated for 2023 release dates.
