When powdered or used as a drawing instrument, hematite has a red color. It has also been used as a pigment in red paint.

Physical Characteristics

Hematite is rusty red or black and gray and is found in numerous igneous and metamorphic rocks in sedimentary marine environments. For example, an abundance of hematite can be found in The Lake Superior region iron ranges of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. It is often found on the bottom of lakes. Though hematite is mainly made of iron and oxygen, it is found mixed in with titanium, aluminum, and manganese.

History of Hematite

The name hematite comes from the Greek word haima or haimatites, which means blood red or blood-like. Hematite is the main element of red ochre and used for cave paintings and personal adornment since prehistoric times in ancient European civilizations.

Uses in Feng Shui

Activate Gen, the Knowledge Area

Gen is the area of the feng shui bagua map that is related to knowledge, skills, and self-cultivation. If you are standing at your front door looking in, Gen will be in the left corner closest to you. Because hematite has an affinity for the mind, it’s often recommended for mental pursuits and study. If you’re working on developing your skills or knowledge, try placing a piece of hematite in the Gen position in your home or bedroom. As you do this, set an intention that hematite will help you as you cultivate your desired skills.

Activate Tai Qi, the Health Area

The center of the bagua map is called the Tai Qi, also known as the health area. It relates to your overall health and well-being, and because it’s in the center, it also touches every area of life. This makes sense because taking care of our physical health sets the foundation for every other aspect of life. It’s challenging to fully be present for your family or career, for example, if your body isn’t feeling well. Tai Qi is connected to the earth element, and it is a good place to focus on when you need stability and grounding. You may want to add a piece of hematite in this area of your home to create more balance and harmony in your physical body and as a reminder to take care of your body’s needs.

Activate Kan, the Career Area

Hematite can also be supportive in the Kan position, or the career area of the feng shui bagua map. Kan position is in the center front of your home, and it’s an area that you might look to if you are seeking more clarity around your career or your path in life. You may want to place hematite here with the intention of transmuting any negative energy that is getting in the way of you following your path in life. You can also set an intention that hematite will remove any repetitive thoughts or self-imposed limits that are causing you to experience blocks or challenges in this area of life. Black hematite will be especially supportive here since black is connected to Kan.

Activate Your Meditation Area

Because of hematite’s ability to calm the mind and help us move past repetitive, unhelpful thoughts, it’s a great stone to meditate with. If you have a meditation space or altar in your home, you can place hematite there to support you in your practice.

Activate Your Vision Board

While vision boards aren’t traditionally used in feng shui, they can be fun tools to create and have in your home. If you don’t have a vision board yet, you can create one by making a collage out of images that inspire you and represent things that you are working towards. Once you’ve created your vision board, you may want to place a hematite stone nearby to help you gain more mental clarity around your goals and move past any self-imposed limits that may be getting in your way.
