Help USPS Fulfill Children’s Christmas Lists Through “Operation Santa”
Every holiday season, Post Offices around the country are flooded with hundreds of thousands of letters to Santa Claus. From toys and basic necessities to help for their loved ones, the Postal Service has been fielding requests for the Big Man for more than 100 years—a monumental undertaking to say the least.
USPS has been in on the magic since 1912, when Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock authorized local Postmasters to allow postal employees and citizens to respond to the letters. The program, which eventually became known as Operation Santa, is now in its 107th year.
In honor of the milestone, USPS has launched a new website for Operation Santa featuring letters from children in 15 U.S. cities, including Austin and Orlando.
Operation Santa makes it possible for individuals and organizations to “adopt” these letters and send gifts in Santa’s place. Starting this week, customers can go online to browse through the letters and adopt that ones that touch them the most. Customers in New York City and Chicago have a choice of browsing and adopting letters to Santa online or in person.
