Hello, Lionel Richie Launched the Fragrance You're Looking For

For those of you who weren't sentient or alive in 1984, let me tell ya, it was a great year for music — and music videos. Just three years old, MTV was playing classics like Prince's "When Doves Cry" and A-ha's "Take on Me." But if anyone tells you that Lionel Richie's "Hello" wasn't one of the most memorable videos of that year, they either have no taste or they're filthy liars. Watching the Grammy winner pine for a young blind woman who reveals her love for him by sculpting a gigantic Lionel Richie head out of clay was one of the most satisfying entertainment moments of the era; not to mention the song is a truly timeless ballad.

It's been 35 years since "Hello" was a number-one hit, and in that time Richie has released eight albums, watched his daughter, Nicole Richie, become a reality TV star, and served as an American Idol judge. But he didn't do one thing that a lot of other celebrities do; he didn't launch a fragrance. But now, at age 70, the legendary singer-songwriter is finally switching from musical notes to fragrance notes with his new scent called — you guessed it — Hello.

Hello is actually two fragrances. There's the feminine eau de parfum, which has fruity top notes like pear and grapefruit, rich floral heart notes like tuberose and jasmine, and a sweet yet musky base of honey and tonka. The more masculine eau de toilette is topped off with citrus and mint, with a heart of lavender and violet leaves, and base notes like patchouli and vetiver. Both are as beautiful as the gold-caged bottles they come in (though I have to admit, I was hoping the bottles would have paid homage to the aforementioned giant Lionel Richie clay noggin).

Richie has been working on the scent for quite some time, telling W in 2016 that he was already two years into developing a fragrance. However, Richie himself doesn't really wear cologne anymore. "I stopped wearing fragrance a long time ago and I started getting into oils," he told the magazine.

Perhaps that will be next: Dancing on the Ceiling fragrance oil.

Lionel Richie's Hello fragrances are now available on Amazon from $36 to $59.
