Helen Mirren Wore a Dress Covered in Kids’ Drawings to the Opera

A night spent at the opera is typically considered a sophisticated affair, with women traditionally choosing gowns and elbow-length gloves.

But Helen Mirren, who, on Monday, attended opening night of Verdi’s Otello at New York’s Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center, decided to take things in an entirely different sartorial direction.

The Oscar winning actress, 70, wore a dress from Dolce & Gabbana’s mother-themed fall 2015 collection, which showed in Milan early last spring. Made of double silk organza, the fit-and-flare midi dress is covered in a print of children’s drawings of houses, fish, and rainbows.

Interestingly, children’s-drawings-as-fashion was somewhat of a mini-trend this past year, with Angelina Jolie wearing a Atelier Versace gown and veil embroidered with drawings by her six children for her wedding to Brad Pitt. Though, to our knowledge, no other celebs have been bold enough to take Dolce’s version for a spin until now.

Mirren paired her dress, which retails for around $4,000, with simple white pumps (sorry, Labor Day), drop earrings, and a structured box bag. It’s a youthful look, to be sure, but we think Mirren pulls it off with panache. If we didn’t know any better, we’d honestly think the above photo was taken of a street style regular outside the tents of New York Fashion Week.
