A new trailer has just dropped for Golda, a biopic about Israel’s first female Prime Minister Golda Meir. It stars Helen Mirren, unrecognizable in the role as Golda with heavy makeup and a grey wig

The film is set in 1973 and takes place during 19 days of the Yom Kippur War. It follows Meir as she attempts to navigate the most delicate of political situations, including juggling a complex relationships with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (Liev Schreiber), facing down her cabinet, and averting Israel’s destruction.

It’s a sharp turn from Mirren’s breezy last role as narrator in Barbie, but one the Brit actress is more than capable of. She’s having a packed 2023 so far, already appearing as Queenie in Fast X, and Hespera in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Golda is directed by Guy Nattiv, who recently spoke to Deadline about the film. “What I’m showing is the defeat of Israel, its downfall. I call it the ‘Requiem of Golda’. Everybody’s losing themselves, the heroes from ’67, figures like Moshe Dayan, the big hero, the superman of Israel, he’s getting a slap.”

“It’s not glorifying anything about the Israeli narrative. The ‘Yom Kippur of’ is a term that everybody uses here, the ‘Yom Kippur of Maccabi Tel Aviv’, the ‘Yom Kippur of Eurovision’… This is like the Vietnam of Israel.”

Golda releases in cinemas August 25. Watch the trailer below.
