All the Heirs to the British Throne—Including Prince George—Pose in a New Royal Family Portrait

Happy New Year from the royal family!

As a kickoff to the 2020s, Buckingham Palace posted a picture of Queen Elizabeth and her heirs to the throne, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George.

“To mark the start of a new decade, a portrait has been released of Her Majesty The Queen and Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge, and Prince George,” they wrote.

Taken in Buckingham Palace’s ornate throne room by photographer Ranald Mackechnie, the image shows the foursome posed together on the plush red carpet. They each wear shades of blue, the Queen complementing her dress with a stunning sapphire brooch. Prince George wears a pair of blue and green tartan pants (which is sure to delight some circles of the internet that often remark on his penchant for shorts). His grandfather, Prince Charles, places a hand on his shoulder. Gilded ornamentation and crystal chandeliers are visible in the background.

The photo was presumably taken on the same day they all made Christmas pudding together for the British Foreign Legion.

As Queen Elizabeth enters her seventh(!) decade on the throne, it’s a visual reminder of the future of the British monarchy. While the group’s informal Christmas cards may evoke a royals, they’re just like us! vibe (the Cambridges’, for example, showed them casually dressed in the countryside), the formality of this portrait gives off an aura of grandeur, authority, and importance. The crown lives on.
