Fourteen-year-old singer Courtney Hadwin is a front-runner to win this season of America’s Got Talent. But that doesn’t mean the judges universally shower her with praise. On Tuesday night’s episode, judges Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel gave her a standing ovation for her performance of “Born to Be Wild” - but their fellow judges Mel B and Heidi Klum did not.

“For me, I have to be really honest, tonight was a little bit off. I felt your nerves,” Mel B told Courtney. “I didn’t feel that confidence that you usually have. I don’t know if it’s the pressure of the semifinals. You did what you did and I loved it, but I still felt those nerves and I’m not used to that with you.”

“I agree a little bit with Mel,” Heidi added, “but I do love having you on the show because you bring a whole different vibe to it all.”

Simon gave a rebuttal to his fellow judges, saying the nerves are part of Courtney’s act. “None of your performances should be perfect because that’s not what you’re about,” he told Courtney. “It’s kind of like a bundle of excitement and it’s raw and it’s messy, but that’s what makes you great. You’re 14 years old, right? I saw you at the beginning of the show backstage, shaking like a leaf. Then you come on stage and you turn into a maniac.”

Howie perhaps summed it up best. “My prediction is you are gonna win America’s Got Talent 2018,” he said.
