Things got just a little awkward on the latest episode of America's Got Talent. While the fifth audition show started out pretty normally, the night turned personal really fast when 20-year-old singer Joseph O'Brien walked on the stage.

After briefly introducing himself, Joseph announced that he came to the show alone, which prompted Heidi Klum to inquire about his relationship status. The young contestant then revealed that he wasn't very experienced with dating.

"I don’t have a girlfriend," he said. “I’ve actually been single my entire life. I’ve actually never gone on a legit date or anything.”

Looking stunned, Heidi pressed Joseph further and then asked him if he's ever "snogged anyone" (which Mel B quickly verified means kissing with tongue).

“No, I haven’t,” Joseph explained. “No kissing, no. It’s not happened.”

The exchange caused the crowd to let out a collective "aw." Heidi then offered encouragement and told him "It's going to happen!"

Joseph went on to crush his rendition of Lionel Richie's "Hello" and was sent through to the next round. But despite his incredible audition, Heidi's line of questioning before he began singing seemed to really bother some viewers. "Poor kid getting the third degree because of his relationship status. Maybe he's not looking for a partner, maybe he's happy with the life the way it is," one person wrote on Facebook.

And others on Twitter agreed:

Still, for the most part, many viewers thought Heidi's "snogged" comment was all in the name of good fun:

And then there were some who didn't care about Heidi's questions at all and were more concerned about trying to score a first date with the talented performer:

Reactions and relationship status aside, we're eager to see what song Joseph will bust out on the piano next. If his next performance is anything like this one, there's no question he'll go far.

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
