Heavenly sighting? Local picture inspires hope

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – A local woman captured a picture of something inside of her church that many believe is an angel or another divine light.

Hundreds of people have been commenting on the photo, which was taken before Palm Sunday services at St. Monica Church, 13623 Rockside Rd, Garfield Heights.

Parishioner Jill Juby-Providenti was taking pictures of the palms before mass began when she said she looked up and saw a brief and brilliant flash of light.

“It was so beautiful like I could barely take my eyes away from it,” she said, “And that fast it was gone, if I wouldn’t have just taken my picture, I would not have been able to get that picture.”

Jill shared it on social media privately, but friends encouraged her to share it publicly, believing the image inspires hope.

The next Sunday at Easter services she learned that others witnessed the phenomena also.

“Some people did tell me they saw the bright light too, and after mass I went to show the priest and he took his glasses off and looked again and he was so happy to see the picture,” she said.

Most of the hundreds of comments on social media are positive with many simply saying: Wow, amazing, awesome and I’m speechless.

One person pointed out that the light “looks like the picture of Jesus (on the wall behind it) is sending the light in the form of an angel.”

But others were less impressed.

“Some people said, ‘Oh, you took a picture of a light, big deal,’” said Jill.

Jill readily admits that the church has many bright lights, but this light appeared different and then disappeared.

Additionally, she says they’ve never seen that light before or since.

“No, I haven’t since. I keep looking and haven’t seen it again.”

Could it be a heavenly sign?  Jill says that she doesn’t know, but with tears welling in her eyes, said that she is grateful to have witnessed the light and is hoping it touches others too.

“I’m not claiming it was anything other than it was beautiful, and if somebody needs to see that in their life, then I want to share it. I feel like I need to share it,” she said, “I want to share it with those who want to see it, who need it because some people need that in their life.”

The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland released the following statement:

“The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland appreciates the beauty of this captured image and the inspiration it creates among the faithful.”
