How to get through the heatwave in style if you don’t like having your legs out

Whether you’re keen on a modest aesthetic or just keeping out of the sun to stay safe, choosing to have your legs covered in temperatures like today’s isn’t a wild suggestion. For the estimated 47% of British women who aren’t keen on their legs, keeping them covered up in warmer weather is their go-to.

As much as the high street is full to the brim with short shorts and fashion’s current obsession, the mini skirt, there have been plenty of stylish celebrities over the past month making the case for anything but short hems. Rejoice!

What to wear in a heatwave without having your legs out

Cotton co-ords are infinitely chic

We can always rely on Sienna Miller to nail summer dressing in the city, and her Wimbledon look did just that. A striped cotton shirt by Ralph Lauren with matching wide-leg trousers was her solution for a humid day courtside, and it’s the perfect answer to dressing for the sun this week, too.

Not only will co-ords cut the faff getting ready in the morning, but if you opt for a natural fabric like cotton or linen, they’ll be breathable, too.

Jumpsuits are an easy winner

While an all-white look like Poppy Delevingne’s or Princess Caroline’s is only for the most careful among us, it’s their choice of ensemble that’s worth noting. A jumpsuit, particularly with loose-fit trousers, is much like co-ords in that it takes the fuss out of matching up tops and bottoms, and keeps you covered up.

Belted designs with a shirt-style top half are smart enough for work, though halter or strapless styles will take you straight through to evening.

Floor-length frocks bring glamour

Just because you don’t want to have your legs on show, it needn’t mean you have to forgo dresses altogether. The floor length maxi should be on your radar if you love the waft a summer dress brings but want that crucial length.

The best part about the maxi is that you needn’t give your footwear too much thought as it’ll rarely be seen. Espadrille wedges are great if you need some height to pull off the length of the dress, but white canvas trainers or leather slides are equally heatwave-friendly casual options.

Tailored trousers work for every occasion

Formal office dress codes are tricky to navigate at the best of times, but none more so than in extreme weather conditions like this week’s high temperatures. A floral maxi or jumpsuit might feel too casual, but tailored trousers, whether tapered and ankle-length or full wide-legs, tick every box.

Stick to a neutral shade - khaki, cream and navy are safe bets - as they’ll work with every shade of top. Make like Maggie Gyllenhaal and wear yours with a pastel linen shirt, loafers and a leather crossbody.
