Michael Mann is cooking up a sequel to Heat. Almost three decades since the 1995 release of the LA-set crime caper, the acclaimed director is revisiting his highly lauded heist movie.

Mann confirmed it over the weekend at Deadline’s Contenders event in London. While speaking on stage to promote his upcoming film, Ferrari, the filmmaker was asked if he’s got plans to turn the novel of Heat 2 - an adaptation he co-wrote - into a movie.

“Yes, “ said Mann. “Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari. It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.”

Adam Driver is reportedly in talks to play a younger version of Robert De Niro’s character Neil McCauley. Well, he has allegedly turned down the Fantastic Four movie, so he's got time.

Mann played coy on the details. “We don’t talk about that yet. Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari]. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”

Thanks to Mann’s novel, we have some idea of how the film version will go. Heat 2 is both a prequel and a sequel, following the characters played by De Niro, Val Kilmer, and Al Pacino pre-Heat, which is set in 1988 Chicago, and later chronicling their lives in the aftermath.
