Heartwarming video captures successful 'promposal' between two high school students with Down Syndrome

A touching moment between two high school students with Down Syndrome has gone viral after one of them successfully got the other to say yes to his "promposal."

David Matthew Cowan, 19, and his girlfriend Saris Marie Garcia, 18, have known each other since they were 3 years old, when the two attended the same speech therapy clinic in Orlando, according to Yahoo Lifestyle. At one point, Cowan and Garcia split ways when Cowan's family moved to Pembroke Pines, Fla. and Garcia's family moved to a nearby city. Still, the two somehow managed to see each other as they ended up attending the same private school.

Years later, both Cowan's and Garcia's families moved back to Central Florida, where Garcia's mother Wanda Cruz said their "friendship and relationship just blossomed." The pair began dating at around 14 and 15.

"As they got older their relationship grew, and that’s when they expressed their feelings and show how much they care for each other," Cruz said.

Last week, the chemistry between the two culminated in a heartwarming episode at a game between Seminole High School and Lake Brantley High School. In a now-viral video, Cowan, who attends Seminole, approaches Saris, who is seen with her cheerleading squad from Lake Brantley. Cowan walks toward Saris with a bouquet of flowers, several balloons and a large sign asking Saris if she wants to attend their first high school homecoming dance together. A visibly stunned Saris can't seem to hide her excitement and — unsurprisingly — says yes to Cowan's "promposal."

"She was radiant! She said many times, 'I can’t believe it!,'" Cruz recalled. "Everyone was so touched by their reaction. They were both so happy."

Since the video was posted last Thursday, it has been watched nearly 4 million times. Thousands of people have also commented with words of support.

"This is sooo precious," one person wrote. "Can't wait to see the pictures of the dance. Very cute couple."

"This is soooo sweet!" another posted. "You hear of all the evil & meanness in society when we have things like this taking place. Have fun!!"

Cowan and Garcia attended their first homecoming at Seminole High School last Saturday, according to Yahoo. The school's principal reportedly honored the pair as a special couple of the night.

"Kids went crazy cheering for them," Cruz said. "David is loved by everyone at Seminole High."
