Heartbreaking Senior Dog Who Protected His Deceased Owner's Body Needs a Forever Home

If you are looking for a dog who will never leave your side, this sweet pup out of Illinois is the dog for you. Ajax was discovered last month by the side of his owner's body after he died three days earlier and now this precious pup is up for adoption.

If there was every a dog who deserved a second chance, this one is it.

The touching video, shared by the Anti-Cruelty Society to Facebook, reads, "Ajax spent the last 10 years of his life with his favorite human by his side. Two weeks ago, he was found loyally standing next to his human, who had tragically passed away three days prior. Ajax has had his life completely turned around. He is now looking for a loving place to call home during his golden years. While we do not have any history on how Ajax is with other dogs, in the shelter he has shown that he could co-exist with other dogs. Ajax hopes to find a home for the holidays surrounded by love!"

People Magazine reports that Ajax is having a home trial with a potential adoptive family, and "At the end of the week, they can adopt their new friend, or if it doesn’t seem to be a match, they can bring the animal back to the shelter," the group says. "It is a win for us and for the animal, as it gives them a wonderful break from the shelter, and it frees up some temporary space for us."

Reason why dogs are so loyal

Dogs are pack animals and they consider their family as part of their pack. When you adopt a dog, they are also adopting you into their pack. By playing with, petting, praising and cuddling your dog they, like humans, release the hormone oxytocin. These levels increase in both humans and their dogs when they interact, so it's like you are both falling more and more in love with each other.

Here's hoping sweet Ajax finds his forever home in time for the holidays. He really deserves all the love and care in the world.
